After a long maternity break, the Japanese continues to fight to stay at the top of the world. But your tennis year 2024 is probably over.
Japan’s tennis star Naomi Osaka will probably not return to the tennis court this season due to injury. The four-time Grand Slam winner canceled her participation in the Billie Jean King Cup in mid-November due to a torn abdominal muscle; it would have been the last tournament in her annual calendar. The 27-year-old had recently skipped her home tournaments in Osaka and Tokyo.
“I thought I had strained my back, but I had an MRI scan in Beijing and they said I bruised a disc in my back and also tore my abdominal muscles,” Osaka said, according to the Japanese news agency Kyodo. On October 1st she was eliminated in the round of 16 in Beijing against world number three Coco Gauff (USA).
In April, Osaka played for the Japanese Billie Jean King Cup team for the first time since 2020. In the duel with Kazakhstan, the Japanese qualified for the final round of the national competition from November 13th to 20th in Malaga, Spain.
Since returning to the tour after the birth of her daughter Shai, Osaka has been fighting to keep up with the world’s best. Your last major victory at the Australian Open 2021 was more than three and a half years ago.
