The Alcañizano basketball club has returned to the court with the creation of a women’s team in the town. The Basketball School had a women’s team in past seasons, but due to the lack of athletes it disappeared over the years.
Currently there are 13 girls from nearby towns who have been encouraged to create this women’s club again. and represent Alcañiz in competitions. «We already have thirteen players registered as a team who take on that challenge. The important thing is that this team gels, that they improve every week they play, that they have a good time and that this team is the spearhead so that more people are encouraged,” says Elias Beguer, the coach of the Alcañiz Basketball School. . The team already has athletes from Alcañiz, Torrevelilla and Valderrobres. In addition, it continues to be in contact with towns such as Andorra and Alcorisa to increase the number of registered people..
This initiative was born by several parents with daughters enrolled in basketball.. The division by sex from cadet onwards caused the categories to remain incomplete and many athletes could not compete or had to train with the men’s team. “They were girls who had been playing for a few years and were left with the feeling that they were not going to be able to continue,” adds the coach of the Alcañizano club.
«The idea is that they are the pioneers. It’s good to train, but in the end you have to play and compete with other people. In the end I think it is positive for them. Last year we sent the children’s team to Zaragoza and the boys ended up delighted, because now we will try with the girls who will surely do very well,” says the coach of the Alcañiz Basketball School. Registration is still open to girls born in 2009, 2010 and 2011 which can be signed up by contacting the pavilion.
