Two months after achieving its fourth medal in the Olympic Games, Mexican archery faces a new challenge: the final of the World Cup in Tlaxcala.
The competition, which opens the curtain next Saturday the 19th, will bring together the 32 best archers in the world, which will mean a challenge for Mexico in terms of organizing international competitions.
“We had little time to rest after the Olympics, but we are ready to make our home field count. It is very exciting to have the best of our sport at home and we are going to seek to get on the podium in all modalities,” said Alejandra Valencia, who won bronze in Paris 2024.
It will be the second time that Tlaxcala hosts this fair, being equaled only by Lausanne, Switzerland. “Our country stands out as the most frequent host country, since this will be the fifth time it has organized the final and the third in a row. World and Olympic medalists from all continents will be present; the best in recurve and compound bows. It is a great opportunity to shine in front of our people and return to activity after the Paris Games,” Valencia added.
In addition to the Sonoran, the country will be represented by Ángela Ruiz, Matías Grande and Sebastián García, current Pan American champions, as well as Dafne Quintero, Central American and Pan American monarch, and Maya Becerra, world runner-up in 2023.
“You can’t always compete against the best in the world, the final is going to be a top-level match that will demand the best of each of us. I think that the six goalkeepers who will represent Mexico are going to fight to be among the first places,” said Grande, the youngest of the national team and Olympic team.
A few days before the start of the contest, workers are fine-tuning details on the stands and structures in the vicinity of the Government Palace.
The competition space is in the assembly phase.
“It is essential for us to develop archery and Tlaxcala has been this pivot that allows us to bring the eyes of the world to this sport. It is a safe, quiet and wonderful place; This combination where the population can enjoy top-level competition in a unique location is working for many sports. We want to leave a good image of our country on an international scale and for them to leave with a pleasant taste in their mouths, as has happened in previous editions,” explained Gabriel Ramos, president of World Archery Mexico.
