The national men’s basketball team has a new leader – Metro Puerto Rico

The National Basketball Federation of Puerto Rico (FBPUR) officially presented to the coach Carlos Gonzalez who will be in front of the national men’s basketball team as its technical director.

González who is the coach of the Carolina Giants in the National Superior Basketball (BSN)was presented as the person who will take the position after the resignation of Nelson Colón on October 3.

For the past three years, González served as Colón’s assistant in the Puerto Rican team; the coach excitedly described it as an honor to take the reins of the national team.

“For me it is an honor, this is the dream of every coach to be in the highest place in the country and the national team is that place; I had the opportunity to be there for the past three years, we grew a lot, we learned and we achieved special objectives,” said González.

According to the general manager of the national team, Carlos Arroyo, the selection process for the new leader was “hand in hand” with the president of the federation, Yum Ramos, who denied rumors about alleged “turbulence” in the work.

“After the departure of Nelson, who did a great job and we are grateful; We started the search for coaches. Carlos submitted several names to us, there were several meetings and we finally decided to continue the 2021 work plan. The rest is all misinformation, at no time has any recommendation from Carlos (Arroyo) been rejected by the selection commission; We work hand in hand with high-level conversations,” Ramos clarified.

The Giants coach also highlighted the management of former national team leader Nelson Colón, while he was in charge of the team.

“The defensive part of what we did and how it is played in FIBA; the preparation and the agility of reaction have to be there, we learned it with him,” González answered in an interview with Metro Puerto Rico.

While Arroyo was very excited with the acquisition of González now as the team’s main leader.

“Basketball today rewards a great person who has all the technical qualities to be in charge of our team, he has demonstrated it for many years and has our support,” Arroyo commented at a press conference.

The national team is preparing for its next qualifying commitments of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) for AmeriCup 2025.
