Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announces badminton team survey
Guaranteeing player choice and improving irrationality
“Other players agree with Ahn’s opinion.”
Request for dismissal of association president Kim Taek-gyu
The national team management issues raised by national badminton representative Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) immediately after the Paris Olympics and the various absurdities of the Korea Badminton Association were all revealed to be true. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to request the dismissal of Kim Taek-gyu, president of the Badminton Association, and expand operational improvement plans to other sports, including the badminton national team.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the final results of the Badminton Association’s office inspection and auxiliary project performance inspection at the Seoul Government Complex Annex on the 31st. Immediately after winning the gold medal in badminton women’s singles at the Paris Olympics on August 5, Se-young Ahn made a decisive statement, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism established an investigation team for about two and a half months to investigate national team management, system improvement, auxiliary project performance, and association operation status. I investigated.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism came up with a plan to change old practices and expand training support by reflecting the opinions of badminton players as much as possible. It was decided to guarantee individual player choice regarding injury management and trainer participation, and to improve the absurd culture of regulations on going out and staying out on weekends and public holidays, as well as cleaning and laundry. In addition, it announced its intention to improve the unreasonable system that exists only in the Badminton Association, such as removing restrictions on players’ participation in international competitions and strengthening players’ rights related to sponsorship contracts, and to strengthen the guarantee of players’ rights and interests.
Director Lee Jeong-woo of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who led this office inspection investigation, said, “As a result of individual interviews with players, there was not much difference from Ahn Se-young’s thoughts,” and added, “Strengthening support for the national team and improving unreasonable systems are obvious to anyone. “I feel sorry for the players that we are only now announcing that we will improve,” he said.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requested cooperation from sports organizations in other sports, including the Korea Sports Council, which operates the athletes’ village, as the early morning training and mountain training, which are mandatory at the Jincheon Athletes’ Village in North Chungcheong Province, are linked to other sports.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also requested the Songpa Police Station in Seoul to investigate on the 29th the case related to Chairman Kim, who is suspected of embezzlement and breach of trust by receiving donations without formal procedures. In addition, it was decided to detect violations of the subsidy law, such as promotion and relegation leagues, youth and youth club league projects, and payment of commissions by association executives to operating companies, and initiate recovery procedures. Citing these reasons, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requested the Badminton Association’s Sports Fair Committee to dismiss Chairman Kim and take severe disciplinary action against the Association’s Secretary General.
Director Lee said, “This is the last opportunity for the Badminton Association to correct its own mistakes,” and added, “If the Association does not correct itself this time, it will be judged to be incapable of correcting itself, and special measures will be taken, such as designating a management body to fire all executives of the Association, and suspending budget support other than player support.” “We will push forward with these measures,” he emphasized.
