Heidenheim‘s coach Schmidt no longer understands the world
October 31, 2024, 6:11 a.m
Heidenheims Trainer Frank Schmidt was furious after the last-minute equalizer was not given against Hertha BSC and massively criticized the referee team. “I can’t find any way to accept what happened at the end. Actually, none of us should be sitting here right now, we should be in the stadium. Second half of extra time. Maybe it’s already a penalty shootout. I have no idea,” said Schmidt the 1:2 in the DFB Cup at the press conference.
What had happened? The capital club was leading shortly before the final whistle. In the fifth minute of injury time, Heidenheim’s Leonardo Scienza lofted the ball into the penalty area from the left side and Paul Wanner headed it into the goal. Equalizer, everyone in the stadium actually thought. But referee Robert Kampka spoke to one of his assistants, who explained to him that there had been a foul beforehand. Schmidt, visibly irritated, raged on the field and promptly received a yellow card. Even the majority of Hertha players and sports director Benjamin Weber initially had no real explanation in the interview zone as to why the goal was not given. Video evidence will only be used in the DFB Cup from the round of 16 onwards.
