“Shut up”: Fan protest against Bundesliga professional and SPD politician
October 21, 2024, 6:57 a.m
Football fans of VfL Wolfsburg have theirs with a banner Anger over homophobic statements by professional Kevin Behrens and at the same time the politics of Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Daniela Behrens were vented. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s Daniela or Kevin, Behrens keep your mouth shut,” read one bannerwhich the supporters showed during Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga game against SV Werder Bremen (2:4). Attacker Behrens is said to have refused to sign a jersey decorated in rainbow colors at the end of September. The offensive player is said to have made a homophobic statement. The 33-year-old has since apologized for his comments and was punished internally by his club.
Lower Saxony SPD Interior Minister Behrens incurred the anger of fans, among other things, because of her statements in connection with the security summit by politicians, the German Football Association and the German Football League. The DFB and DFL are responsible for ensuring safety in the stadiums, she said, and in recent months, after riots at the Lower Saxony derby between Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig, she had long pushed for the second division duel to be played without visiting fans this season.
