Cartagena is in luck. The Sports Palace will become, for the first time in its history, the official headquarters of the UEFA Futsal Champions League, after the draw held in Nyon confirmed the port city as one of the four hosts of the Elite Round. This round will be held from November 26 to December 1, dates on which the city of Cartagena will host one of the most anticipated events in European futsal, placing itself on the international sports map.
The draw ended up smiling on the Cartagena team, as it avoided the most feared rivals (Sporting and Semey) and, furthermore, chance soon smiled on the entity chaired by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, when the first ball drawn from the drum awarded the city the headquarters of group A. United Galati from Romania, Catalia C/5 from Italy and Riga Futsal Club from Latvia will be the three teams that visit Cartagena to compete in this phase of the Champions League, with a pass to the Final Round for the first classified as the only prize.
The other venues fell on the side of MNK Futsal Dinamo (Group B), Sporting Clube de Portugal (Group C) and Palma Futsal (Group D), thus leaving the Riga team as the only candidate without the luck of hosting the round. The club’s objective has been achieved, to play the most complicated phase of the competition at the Palacio de los Deportes. It was a plus that had been fought for months within the red and white offices. Four teams and a single ticket to the Final-Four for the group champion is at stake. This unique opportunity will allow the fans to enjoy a top-level European competition at the Cantón Avenue facility.
