the Warriors still in the lead

the Warriors still in the lead

Like every year, Forbes reveals its ranking regarding the value of NBA franchises. And like every year since 2022, it is the Golden State Warriors who are at the top.

Stephen Curry‘s franchise has been in a bit of trouble since his NBA title won in 2022, but the value of the California franchise is still in good shape.

According to Forbesthe Warriors are now worth 8.8 billion dollars, that is to say twice as much as the average NBA franchise (4.4 billion). It’s even 1.3 billion more than the Knicks (second in the ranking, 7.5 billion) and 1.7 billion more than the Lakers (third, 7.1 billion).

The Warriors were bought in 2010 for $450 million.

If the owners had invested that money in the S&P 500 index, they would have $1.6 billion now. An excellent return.

To calculate the value of an NBA franchise, Forbes takes into account – roughly – the market in which it operates (small or large market), the sporting results (which can boost or undermine the value of the franchise), the venue in which the team in question plays (which represents a major source of income for the franchise), and the power of the brand (determined in particular by the presence of “star” players).

Top 10 NBA franchise values (2024)

  1. Golden State Warriors: $8.8 billion
  2. New York Knicks : 7,5 milliards
  3. Los Angeles Lakers: 7.1 billion
  4. Boston Celtics : 6 milliards
  5. Los Angeles Clippers: 5.5 billion
  6. Chicago Bulls : 5 milliards
  7. Houston Rockets : 4,9 milliards
  8. Brooklyn Nets: 4.8 billion
  9. Dallas Mavericks : 4,7 milliards
  10. Philadelphia Sixers : 4,6 milliards

The Golden State Warriors – who operate in the San Francisco market – have seen their value explode since the arrival of Stephen Curry and the creation of the dynasty between 2015 and 2022. This value continues to rise today thanks in particular to revenues generated by the Chase Center, the new venue which opened its doors in 2019 on the Mission Bay side (San Francisco). The latter would have allowed the Warriors to collect no less than $700 million in revenue last season.

The Warriors are the most valuable NBA franchise for the third straight year. They racked up over $700 million in local revenue last season at Chase Center. That’s wild! https://t.co/jf5r9ChnQk

As indicated Forbesthe overall value of NBA franchises continues to rise thanks to the large revenues generated by record attendance in theaters and the constant increase in partners (particularly internationally) who want to associate with the Great League. The new TV rights deal recently signed – which is estimated at $76 billion – should boost the figures even more in the years to come…
