Sensational and absurd gesture of two New York Yankees fans in the baseball championship final against the Los Angeles Dodgers: they grab Mookie Betts‘ hands and steal the ball he caught on the fly.
It was true madness, never seen at the highest possible level of world baseball, that is World Seriesthe final series of the American professional championship. To play there Major League Baseball New York and Los Angeles remained, with the Dodgers Californians who entered Game 4 with a 3-0 lead over the Yankees and therefore with the first match point available, being a best of 7 series. Tonight’s match was won by New York 11-4, but it is clear that a miracle would be needed to reverse the series. After the race there was almost more talk than what happened at the beginning of the race, when two Yankees fans stole the fly ball caught by Mookie Betts of the Dodgers, interfering with the game in a manner as sensational as it was absurdin what has been defined as “the dirtiest action in years memory“. All made useless by the decision of the umpires, who validated the out of the New York batter.
The madness of two Yankees fans: they grab Mookie Betts’ hands and steal the fly ball
The match had just begun at Yankee Stadium, packed with 50,000 spectators hoping for a comeback in a series that now appears to be over, when the first inning experienced a surreal episode: New York’s opening batter Gleyber Torres threw a high ball along the sideline, but before the ball reached the stands and ended up foul, it was caught on the fly (which means automatic elimination of the batter) with a great athletic gesture by Los Angeles right fielder Mookie Betts, already MVP in 2018 when he won the title with the Boston Red Sox.
In the catch, Betts’ glove-covered hand ended up high, at the level of the first row of spectators and a couple of them decided to end up on the front pages, but for the wrong reason: one of the two tried to steal the ball from the Dodgers player, the other supported him by pushing Betts’ other hand away, until the ball rolled away. All to the astonished amazement of the rest of the audience and the commentators. However, the catch was now clear and in the full spirit of the game the umpires decided to call out the Yankees batter.

The two spectators were immediately ejected from Yankee Stadium
The affair therefore had no consequences on a sporting level, even if the Dodgers ended up losing the game anyway, extending the series to at least Game 5. The only serious consequences were the two Yankees fans, expelled from the stadium immediately and in all likelihood also banned from the Stadium for the future.
