This afternoon Carolina Marín receives the Princess of Asturias Sports Award in its 44th edition

The Campoamor Theater in Oviedo will once again host the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony this Friday, which will reach its forty-fourth edition in 2024. The ceremony, chaired by King Felipe and Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Huelva badminton player Carolina Marín will be honored with the Princess of Asturias Sports Award.

The event will begin with the entry of the entire Royal Family into the Oviedo cultural facility, after greeting the public in the Plaza del Teatro and the authorities who will be waiting for them in the lobby. Next, the Royal City of Oviedo Bagpipe Band will perform the national anthem of Spain and, immediately afterwards, the winners of the 2024 Princess of Asturias Awards will enter the stage accompanied by the fanfare ‘Ayres for cornetts and sagbuts’, by the English composer John Adson.

The president of the Foundation, Ana Isabel Fernández Álvarez, will give a speech which will be followed by the words of Ana Blandiana, Princess of Asturias Award for Literature; Michael Ignatieff, Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences; Marjane Satrapi, Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities; and Joan Manuel Serrat, Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts.

In this year’s edition, the Princess of Asturias Foundation has awarded Joan Manuel Serrat with the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts; Marjane Satrapi with the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities; Carolina Marín with the Princess of Asturias Sports Award; Michael Ignatieff with the Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences; Ana Blandiana with the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature; the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) with the Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation; Daniel J. Drucker, Jeffrey M. Friedman, Joel F. Habener, Jens Juul Holst and Svetlana Mojsov with the Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research; and Magnum Photos with the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.

Once the awards have been presented, the Princess of Asturias and King Felipe VI will give their speeches. Behind them, the Royal City of Oviedo Bagpipe Band will perform the anthem of Asturias, giving way to the winners, who will leave the traditional stage in which the awards are presented accompanied by the same bagpipe band, which will perform the parade ‘El Xarreru ‘.

Finally, His Majesty the King will declare the event closed and will announce the Princess of Asturias Awards 2025.
