Three Omani students shine at ISF Gymnasiade in Bahrain

Muscat – Oman’s national school team has claimed three medals – one gold and two silver – at the 17th International School Sport Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade being held in Bahrain from October 23 to 31.

Over 5,550 students representing 80 schools from 71 countries are participating in the event featuring competitions in 26 sports, including athletics, archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, gymnastics and judo. The event also has competitions for participants with disabilities in athletics, badminton and judo.

Fahmi bin Kamel al Tamimi struck gold in taekwondo (68kg category), triumphing over a Bahraini competitor in the final match. In fencing, Ahmed bin Anwar Kaskas clinched a silver, narrowly losing in the final to an Iranian player. Oman’s second silver was won by Israa al Siyabiya in the women’s fencing.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Omani national school team will compete in athletics, table tennis and chess and other weight categories of taekwondo.

First held in 1974 in Wiesbaden, Germany, ISF Gymnasiade is a biennial event. Founded in 1972, ISF is an international non-profit sports organisation, acting as the umbrella organisation and governing body for national school sports organisations around the world, organising sports and educational events for youth from 11 to 18 years old.

Recognised by International Olympic Committee since 1995, ISF currently consists of 135 members from five continents organising five to seven events every year and has more than 30 different sports included in its competition programme.

ISF also creates and delivers quality education and capacity-building activities for physical education teachers, national school sport representatives, coaches  and students around the world.
