The tireless Swiss Stan Wawrinka conjured up three great victories on the hard court at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Stockholm before being eliminated in the semifinals against the American Tommy Paul on Saturday. The North American, ranked fourth in the Swedish capital, beat the wildcard player 6:3, 6:2 after 1:21 hours.

Wawrinka, who at the age of 39 is still good for surprises, had seen off the sixth-seeded American Brandon Nakashima twice in the first round, 6:4, and then the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a pacing 6:4, -3:6,- 7:5 battle was delivered and on the quarter-final Friday even the tournament favorite Andrey Rublev from Russia won 7:6 (5), 7:6 (5).

In the second semi-final duel, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor will meet. Wawrinka will be involved in his home tournament in Basel next week and will benefit from a wildcard there. Romand would also be registered at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris and at the 250 hard court event in Belgrade – at these events, “Stan the man” would also depend on a wildcard in order to be able to be in the main draw.

Here is the individual tableau in Stockholm.
