Sergio Fernández has given new joy to the Torrejonero sport, in this case in the pickleball discipline, proclaiming himself runner-up in Spain in the doubles modality, +18 3.5 category.

The Torrejonero took second place on the podium with his teammate Mariano Chillón. In the final they lost to the couple formed by José Luis Fernández and Andrés González by 11-9 and 11-7.

The tournament was held from September 26 to 29 and had more than 400 players participating. The first rounds took place on the 26th and 27th at the Club el Tejar in Somontes. For its part, the finals were held in the Plaza de España in Madrid on courts set up for this purpose and the decisive matches were broadcast by Teledeporte and the RTVE Play internet platform.

“Congratulations on this runner-up finish in Spain in a sport that is increasingly gaining more followers in our country. We hope to continue celebrating your new successes in the future,” highlighted the mayor, Alejandro Navarro Prieto.

What is pickleball

Sergio Fernández has been practicing pickleball for three years, a sports discipline that was born in the United States in 1965. It was created by Congressman Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, Jordania Steranka and Barney McCallum. His intention was to design a new sport that was fun, challenging and that everyone could play. It combines elements of tennis, paddle tennis, badminton and ping-pong.

The court has the same dimensions as the badminton court and in Spain it is regulated by the Pickleball Committee of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), responsible for managing licenses, the official competition and the national ranking.
