Tragedy Strikes: Two Athletes Lose Lives at Triathlon World Championships in Spain

Two athletes died this Thursday during the age-related events of the World Triathlon Championship, which is being held in Torremolinos, Spain, World Triathlon announced in a statement on social media.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that two participants (one from Mexico and the other from Great Britain) died today, October 17th, during the Triathlon World Championships. We express our deepest condolences to their families, friends, national federations and the entire triathlon family”, informed the organization.

According to the EFE agency, the victims are two men, who competed in the age group category, having died in different contexts. The Mexican athlete died during the swimming segment and the British athlete during the running segment.

The 57-year-old British athlete suffered a cardiac arrest, and the emergency service received a telephone call alerting them to a person who had passed out on the Torremolinos Promenade, in Málaga, during the running event, at around 4:15 p.m. as reported by EFE.

The triathlon World Championships take place until Sunday, in Torremolinos.

The Portuguese Maria Tomé, who was present at the Paris2024 Olympic Games, won this Thursday the bronze medal in the under-23 competition, which was won by the Hungarian Karolina Helga Horváth, while the Slovak Zuzana Michalickova came in second place.
