JAKARTA – It happens quite often that surfers are attacked and killed by sharks. What happened to Italian surfer and influencer Giulia Manfrini (†36), on the other hand, is hard to believe: While surfing, she was hit in the upper body by a swordsman’s sword and died.

As reported by the Italian media, Manfrini was near the island of Masokut, a popular place for surfing off the coast of Sumatra (Indonesia). Then the swordsman jumped out of the water and hit her in the chest! A 36-year-old woman suffered a wound five centimeters deep.

Two other surfers saw the accident, rushed to help and took Manfrini to the medical center. There she succumbed to her injury.

Grief for Giulia Manfrini

Giulia Manfrini came from Venaria Reale in Piedmont and was a snowboarding instructor. After the injury, according to Il Messaggero, she reoriented and took up surfing and moved to Bali. She also founded a travel agency.

“We believe she died doing what she loved and in the place she loved,” says her business partner James on Instagram. “Giulia was the lifeblood of this company and her contagious enthusiasm for surf, snow and life will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with her.”

How dangerous is the swordsman?

Swordfish is a predatory fish found in temperate to tropical seas. It rarely comes close to the coast, is usually 1.2 to 2 meters and can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h. In the South-East Pacific it can weigh over 500 kilos, in the Mediterranean only around 230 kilos. Attacks on humans are rare.
