U19 international match against Switzerland in Krempe

Next Monday (October 28, 2024) the time has finally come when the first badminton international match in the history of the town will be played on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of TuS Krempe (Schleswig-Holstein). The German U19 national team is playing the first of its two international matches in the north against Switzerland.

Germany is competing with its best youth national players. The national team is represented by Gloria Poluektov, Luis Pongratz and Mark Niemann, among others, who all played at the U19 World Cup in China two weeks ago. In addition to the players mentioned, the reigning U17 vice-European champion Katharina Nilges, Leonie Wronna, Marie Stern, Aurelia Wulandoko, Yuri Cho, Felix Schütt and Alexander Zhang will fight for points for victory in Krempe. The international match against Switzerland serves as preparation for both sides for the European Youth Championship in Spain, which begins at the end of November.

One of the players who is expected to be the focus is Luis Pongratz. He can be described as a local hero from the region. Luis has been training at the Hamburg federal base since he was 13. Luis’ father, Oliver Pongratz, has also been deployed at the Hamburg federal base since the beginning of 2023. Oliver, who was an Olympic participant (1996) and became a multiple German champion in men’s singles, now passes on his knowledge to the young athletes as head and coach of the federal base.

The town of Krempe is approx. 50 km north of Hamburg. One day later (Tuesday, October 29th) both national teams will meet again in Bremen.
