USA Grand Prix 2023: Key Highlights from F1 Qualification and Sprint Races

Dutch F1 racer Max Verstappen of the Red Bull team won the sprint qualification at the US GP. He beat the British George Russell from Mercedes by 12 thousandths of a second, and Monaco’s Charles Leclerc in Ferrari was more than two tenths behind him. Verstappen’s main title rival Lando Norris (McLaren) was fourth, 0.250 seconds behind the Dutchman.

The nineteenth Grand Prix of the Formula 1 motoring championship in the 2024 season will take place in the USA. From Friday to Sunday (October 18 – 20), the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas will host, in addition to Friday’s only free practice, sprint qualifying, followed by sprint races on Saturday, and qualifying for the main race at midnight Slovak time and finally the US Grand Prix itself.

The reigning world champion, who is fighting for his fourth championship, will be on pole position for the first time since May. But then he won the qualification for the main race of the VC Emilia Romagna, in which the winner takes 25 points, not eight as in the sprint.

His lead over Norris is 52 points six races before the end of the season, with 180 still in the bank. According to his own words, the Briton had a problem with the balance of the car in Austin.

In the sprint qualifying in Austin, Nico Hülkenberg impressed, who won the sixth position for the home team Haas, while his teammate Kevin Magnussen was only one row lower.

Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez, who had only one attempt in Q2 and finished eleventh, did not qualify. Norris’s colleague Oscar Piastri was eliminated in Q1 after his time was canceled for not complying with track limits and will start from 16th position.
