Wolfsburg attacker Kevin Behrens is said to have refused to sign a rainbow jersey. He is said to have made homophobic comments. The club has now imposed a fine on the former national player. The warning could have dire consequences for him.
According to a media report, Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg punished its player after homophobic comments by professional soccer player Kevin Behrens. According to information from the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”, the club’s management apparently imposed a heavy fine on the 33-year-old and allegedly also issued a warning.
According to the newspaper, the warning threatens him with dismissal if this happens again. Lower Saxony did not comment on the specific punishment, only confirmed that there were sanctions.
Attacker Behrens, who according to his statements had recently asked for an apology, is said to have refused to sign a jersey decorated in rainbow colors at the end of September. With this, VfL wanted to set an example for diversity and tolerance. The offensive player is said to have made a homophobic statement. The words “I won’t sign such gay shit” are said to have been mentioned.
Behrens apologizes
Last week Behrens told “Sport Bild”: “My spontaneous statements were absolutely not okay. I would like to apologize for that. The issue was clearly discussed internally and I ask for your understanding that I do not wish to comment further on it.”
According to “Sport Bild,” VfL said: “During an internal meeting, there were statements that were not in line with the stance of VfL Wolfsburg. The incident was dealt with internally immediately,” it said.
VfL reiterated that it is aware of its social responsibility: “The club and its employees stand for diversity and tolerance; fundamental values such as respect, honesty and openness have always been firmly anchored in the club’s philosophy.”
Behrens moved from Union Berlin to Wolfsburg last January. He played one international match in 2023.
