Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker seem to be getting into shape in time for the big home tournament in Basel: The two Swiss struck as outsiders at the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Stockholm on Wednesday. Wawrinka beat the more highly rated Brandon Nakashima 6:4 and 6:4. And Stricker, who is slowly getting back on track after a long injury break, defeated Matteo Berrettini 7:6 (6) and 6:4.
The three-time major champion Wawrinka will face Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina in the round of 16. And could face tournament favorite Andrey Rublev in the round of the last eight.
Stricker, who is coached by the German Dieter Kindlmann, is already one round further and is waiting for the winner of the game between Grigor Dimitrov and Quentin Halys in the quarterfinals. The success against Berrettini was only the third match win this season. The first was in Winston-Salem against Federico Coria, the second was in the first round in Stockholm against Aleksandar Kovacevic.
