Both leagues have three finalists at each position, including the utility position, which was awarded for the first time in 2022.

To determine the winners in the nine traditional positions, MLB’s 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team voted for players from their league, excluding those from their own team. These votes constitute 75% of the total selection, while the SABR Defensive Index counts for the other 25%.

For the utility position, Rawlings collaborated with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula, separate from the traditional selection process.
