Wuelfrath. At the German Judo Championships 2024 last weekend in Stuttgart, Fabi Püchel from the Wülfrath Gymnastics Association returned to the national stage with an impressive performance.
This year only one athlete from Wülfrath was able to take part in the competition. Last year’s third-place finisher Sophie Püchel had to cancel her participation in the class up to 57 kg due to injury after she was injured at the “New York Open” in the spring.
Fabi Püchel also faced challenges as she was unsure until the last second whether she would be able to take part in the competition after a viral infection. It was only after the final training on Thursday evening that she received the go-ahead for the competition on Saturday. So the focus was on the fighter up to 70 kg.
With victory in the German Cup under his belt, Püchel traveled to Stuttgart with high expectations. In a traditionally strong weight class, it was clear that a good placement would only be possible with an optimal competition day, as all of the top national athletes were fighting for the coveted medals. In the first fight, Püchel met a well-known competitor from Speyer, with whom she trained during her boarding school time in Cologne. In an exciting duel, Püchel mastered the mental challenge and secured victory in extra time with a beautiful throwing technique.
In the second round there was an impressive win against an athlete from Leipzig, which she achieved with great foot technique, and thus moved into the pool final. An athlete from Lower Saxony was waiting here. Püchel once again showed her versatility in standing and ground techniques and won confidently throughout the entire fight,
which secured her a place in the semi-finals. There she met a top athlete from Bavaria. However, Püchel was unable to build on her strong performance and missed the first competition, which meant her dream of reaching the final was dashed. In the fight for bronze, the woman from Wülfrather met the U21 World Cup participant from Bavaria. The fight was open and balanced for a long time, but ultimately Püchel had to admit defeat on the ground and took an impressive 5th place at the German Championships. Despite the disappointment with the placement after reaching the semi-finals, the Cologne student can be proud of her performance after her serious knee injury.
The judo department of the Wülfrath Gymnastics Association, especially coach Nicole Püchel, was extremely satisfied with the committed appearance of their athlete, who found her way back to the German judo top after a tough fight.
