The brothers Álvaro and Alberto Gayarre, young judokas from the Judo Club Zaragoza, have achieved a historic achievement by obtaining the silver medal at the 2024 World Kata Championship (Las Vegas), in the Nage No Kata modality, U23 category.
Álvaro and Alberto began the competition by going first in their group in the qualifying round with 372 points, ahead of Japan, France and Italy, among others. In the final phase they reached a score of 365.5which secured them second place, only 7 points from gold which was obtained by the Basque couple, with a score of 372.2. This result marks an unprecedented milestone, with two Spanish couples on the podium of a U23 world kata championship.
Since its inception in 2014, the Gayarre brothers have had an outstanding career, including three Spanish championships and two runners-up finishes. In 2021 they participated in their first World Championship, achieving a respectable fifth position. At 21 years old they mark a historical milestone; silver and second place in Las Vegas, which consolidates its place among the world’s kata judo elite and the success of Aragonese athletes on the international stage continues. Today both combine their university studies in nursing and law with training and collaboration in the Zaragoza judo club.
