2024 AFF Cup: Key Predictions for the U-22 National Team Players Chosen by STY

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Indonesian National Team Coach Shin Tae Yong (STY) said it would bring 23 U-22 players to appear 2024 AFF Cup. The following are predictions for the 23 U-22 national team players who could be called up by STY for the 2024 AFF Cup.

The 2024 AFF Cup or what is currently known as the ASEAN Championship will take place from 8 December – 5 January.

The Indonesian national team will play U-22 players for the tournament. That’s because the ASEAN Championship event is close to the 2026 World Cup Qualifications.

“Our team will come with the U-22 National Team. So of course their abilities will be reduced compared to other teams,” said STY at the 2024 ASEAN Trophy Tour Championship, last Saturday (2/11).

With this statement, it is predicted that STY will be able to look at players who shine in the U-20 National Team to be called up to strengthen the Red and White Team. Among the U-20 players, names such as Dony Tri Pamungkas, Jens Raven, Kadek Arel, and Riski Afrisal can be called.

For the goalkeeper position, STY is expected to rely on Ernando Ari from Persebaya Surabaya, Adi Satryo from PSIS Semarang, and Daffa Fasya from Borneo FC, all of whom are under 23 years old.

The defense line will likely be filled with talented young players such as Komang Teguh, Muhammad Ferarri, Alfeandra Dewangga, and Pratama Arhan who currently play for Suwon FC, South Korea.

For the middle sector, STY is predicted to call up Arkhan Fikri, Rayhan Hannan, Ikhsan Zikrak and Irfanjauhari who have shown impressive performances in League 1.

Meanwhile, in the attack sector, the names of potential young players such as Hokky Caraka, Riski Afrisal, Jens Raven, and Arkhan Kaka are considered worthy of filling the front line of the U-22 Indonesian National Team.

Names such as Rizky Ridho, Ramadhan Sananta, Rafael Struick, Ivar Jenner, and Justin Hubner are not expected to be called STY for the 2024 AFF Cup. Even though they are still in the young age category, these players are predicted not to be called STY.

This is because they are in the main squad of the Indonesian National Team in the third round of 2026 World Cup Qualification. Indonesia is scheduled to meet Japan on November 15 and Saudi Arabia on November 19 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

With such a busy schedule, plus the AFF Cup is not on FIFA’s agenda, it is likely that STY will not call these names.

The 2024 AFF Cup schedule which clashes with League 1 also means that Shin Tae Yong needs to take a persuasive approach to clubs to release their players so they can appear for the national team.

Despite fielding a young squad, the South Korean coach remains optimistic that he can take Indonesia to the 2024 AFF Cup final which will take place from 8 December 2024 to 5 January 2025.

The Indonesian National Team TC for the 2024 AFF Cup will start on November 26 in Bali for 10 days before leaving for Myanmar to play their first match on December 9.
