After a winless series, the second division soccer team Hamburger SV separated from coach Steffen Baumgart. The club announced this one day after the 2-2 home game against FC Schalke 04, in which HSV had lost a 2-0 lead. Assistant coach Merlin Polzin will take over the team on an interim basis, as he did in the spring.
“Steffen gave everything for HSV with great passion, energy and commitment until the end,” said a statement from sports director Stefan Kuntz. “Our analysis of the current situation and yesterday’s game made it clear once again that we believe a new impulse is necessary to get out of the performance and results crisis.” The team was informed of the decision in the morning.
Most recently, Hamburg had not won in five competitive games in a row. Baumgart therefore came under increasing criticism. After impressive performances in games against Paderborn (2:2), Düsseldorf (3:0) and Magdeburg (3:1), the North Germans had some slumps that were difficult to explain. In Elversberg the team conceded a 2:4, and against relegation candidate Eintracht Braunschweig HSV lost 1:3 due to individual mistakes.
His assistants are also leaving with Baumgart
Baumgart himself is said to have taken the decision calmly. “It was an exciting and very intense time. I remain connected to the club and hope that HSV achieves its goals,” said the 52-year-old. “My thanks also go to the entire staff and all employees in the office.” His assistants René Wagner and Kevin McKenna also have to go with Baumgart.
Baumgart only took over the coaching position in February. After HSV finished fourth last season and clearly missed out on promotion, the negative trend continued into the current season. It is now the seventh year that Hamburg has been playing in the second division. This makes HSV the club that has been playing in the league the longest of all current second division teams.
