40 sailors and a new, more flexible qualification system for the 2028-2029 edition

The organizers have announced a more flexible qualification system than the previous one.

Four days before the start of the tenth edition in Les Sables d’Olonne, the Vendée Globe organization unveiled this Wednesday the regulations for the following edition scheduled for 2028-2029. As this year, a maximum of forty sailors will be allowed on the starting line, including thirty-seven qualified after a more flexible qualification system than that put in place this year and three who will be able to receive an invitation from the organizers. To qualify, you will also need “complete a major single-handed race in the IMOCA Globe Series Championship (in a race time less than or equal to that of the first in the event increased by 50%)”.

Participation in the Vendée Globe 2024-2025 will allow competitors to earn points for this four-year qualifying ranking from which the three races where the sailors performed least well will be removed. “This also makes it possible not to compete in certain races and therefore to deviate from the circuit for a given period, in order to take into account all the events that sailors may experience, such as maternity. In addition, sailors who are injured or suffering from an illness can plan their recovery without compromising their chances of participating in the next edition of the Vendée Globe. International teams wishing to carry out public relations missions abroad for several months will not be penalized either.details the organization in a press release.

The Clarisse Crémer affair (she had been dismissed by her partner at the time after her motherhood because she risked not qualifying) therefore seems to have borne fruit.
