50 badistas compete in Forestville

Badminton was popular on November 23 at the Rivières de Forestville high school gymnasium when 50 badminton players met for a tournament.

It was the 4e edition of this event organized by Erik Langelier from Forestville, helped by his parents Dany Langelier and Nancy Therrien.

“We had 50 participants, which was our biggest edition to date. We are very happy because the small badminton scene on the North Shore has diminished a lot. So, seeing a lot of badistas in the same place, it was good fun », Comments the organizer, proud of this success.

Players from all over the North Shore were there and even friends from Sherbrooke took part. Categories A, B and C (mixed, women’s, men’s, singles and doubles) were offered depending on the level of play of the competitors.

The badists played at least two matches during the day. Due to the large turnout this year, the tournament took place from 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We do it over a day to facilitate the participation of those who come from outside, who have small families,” explains the badminton enthusiast.

Rise in popularity

Badminton tournaments have become increasingly rare in the region over the last ten years, but over the past two years, there has been an upsurge, observes Erik Langelier. Fans of this sport can compete against each other in Sacré-Cœur, Forestville and Baie-Comeau, among others.

In Forestville, a friendly league meets two evenings a week at the Polyvalente des Rivières gymnasium. Around ten players compete freely and it is always possible to register. Information can be found on the Forestville Badminton Club Facebook page.

One thing is certain, Erik Langelier intends to organize the Forestville tournament next year. A 5e edition is therefore on the program for November, depending on the dates of other events in the region.
