Swiss Sylvain Wallner, defender of the Austrian club FC Blau-Weiss Linz, decided to end his football career for religious reasons.
The 22-year-old player said, “I want to follow Jesus Christ, and the biblical day of rest has become important to me.”
Wallner added, in statements published by his club, “This means that I do not want to play football on Saturdays.”
Sunday is considered the day of rest for Christians in Europe. But Saturday is the original day of rest, which is viewed as a Jewish tradition.
FC Blau-Weiss Linz announced that both parties agreed to terminate the contract early, while it was scheduled to expire in 2026.
Wallner joined the Austrian team last September, coming from Zurich.
