After the death of President Kay Bernstein, Fabian Drescher took over the highest office at Hertha BSC until the new elections. The members have now overwhelmingly expressed their confidence in the 42-year-old. Now he wants to involve his competitors.
Fabian Drescher will lead the second division soccer team Hertha BSC as president for the next four years. The 42-year-old lawyer was elected as Kay Bernstein’s successor at the general meeting in the City Cube of Messe Berlin by the 3,903 of the 4,061 members present who were entitled to vote. Bernstein died unexpectedly in mid-January at the age of 43. Drescher had already carried out the presidential office on an interim basis after Bernstein’s death.
“In recent years and months, new structures have been created and important decisions have been made on a sporting level. The team is full of our own offspring. We are on the road to recovery,” said Drescher, “the most important thing: we have regained trust. We feel solidarity like I’ve never felt before.”
The new president prevailed with 2,983 votes (81.7 percent) against entrepreneurs Uwe Dinnebier (582) and Stepan Timoshin (15) as well as former Hertha professional Wolfgang Sidka (64) and restaurateur Olaf Brandt (seven). Drescher received a standing ovation after his five-minute performance, as well as after the election.
Now he wants to hold his opponents responsible, as he somewhat surprisingly announced after the election. “I can imagine supporting each of the candidates,” said Drescher. He wants to involve the candidates in the work.
Drescher wants to continue the “Berlin Way”.
The 42-year-old has been a member of the executive committee since 2016 and at that time also approved the years under Lars Windhorst, which ultimately brought Hertha into a very oppressive financial situation. Under Bernstein, the long-time Hertha fan was promoted to vice-president and was responsible for his changes at the club.
“I would like to see this path continued consistently. It is the only way for Hertha,” Drescher said, “I have shown in the last few weeks and months that I am capable of leading Hertha BSC.”
