After a lackluster game, Mohammed Amoura saved Wolfsburg from a deserved draw with his second goal of the season (82nd minute). Phillip Tietz (34th) had previously used one of the few chances to take the FCA lead.

Augsburg extended its season-long crisis further afield and has been waiting for an away win for more than seven months. FCA last celebrated a win against Lower Saxony in March when they won 3-1 away.

Wolfsburg’s Hasenhüttl bitterly disappointed

“We are not satisfied with this point today. With the effort we put in today and the opportunities we created for ourselves”said Ralph Hasenhüttl, coach of VfL Wolfsburg. His team would have had the patience and the options. “It’s very, very bitter that it’s only enough for one point in the end. We really wanted to get our first home win today,” he said disappointedly.

FC Augsburg coach Jess Thorup had mixed feelings about the missed win: “On the one hand, I’m disappointed because we were very close. On the other hand, you have to say that we didn’t create that many chances. We scored a goal from one or two chances. The opponent had a lot of possession.”

No penalty after Augsburg hand contact

After a slow start to the game, Tiago Tomas contributed VfL’s first tentative attempt with his finish after 18 minutes. But the central shot posed no problem for Augsburg goalkeeper Nediljko Labrovic.

A shot from Ridle Baku in the penalty area caused discussion. FCA defender Dimitrios Giannoulis was unable to pull his hand away in time. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened. There was no penalty.

Voting problem at Wolfsburg leads to a goal conceded

Completely surprisingly, Tietz took advantage of a coordination problem between VfL goalkeeper Kamil Grabara and central defender Denis Vavro and took the lead – which was flattering at the time given the proportions of the game.

The Slovakian Vavro had relied too much on his colleague in goal, while Grabara, on the other hand, had gone far out of the goal. Tietz reached the ball first, went around the goalkeeper and made it 1-0.

Disjointed game between Wolfsburg and Augsburg in the second half

The tailwind of the successes in the DFB Cup during the week was not noticeable for either team in a game that was uneventful. It stayed that way in the disjointed second half.

First of all, the ‘Wolves’ supporters applauded the comeback of offensive player Lukas Nmecha, who was back in the squad for the first time since March and came on as a substitute in the 80th minute. And finally the home fans celebrated once again – this time about the longed-for goal – when Amoura scored a remarkable shot into the top right corner.
