An oak tree for the club’s 100th anniversary

Release: November 23, 2024

The club has been called TSV GWD Minden since 1985, but it is firmly anchored in the Dankersen district. As a visible sign, the club planted an oak tree next to the Helmut-Meisolle youth home on Friday. “Strong, firmly rooted and long-lasting,” said honorary chairman Horst Bredemeier, describing the properties of the oak, “that suits us.”
Club celebrities such as Friedrich Spannuth and Herbert Lübking, who lives in the neighborhood, took part in the small ceremony on the lawn in front of the Primus school, as did Minden’s mayor Michael Jäcke and Nils Torbrügge as managing director of the Bundesliga company. Everyone briefly took the shovel in their hands and shoveled a bit of earth at the young oak’s feet. The necessary specialist work was carried out by the Stemmeran landscape and horticultural company Hoppe, led by the two managing directors Alexander and Jan-Christoph Hoppe – both former players in the GWD handball youth team.
By planting the English oak, the association concluded its 100th anniversary celebrations. The club was founded on May 31, 1924 as TSV Eiche Dankersen. A moss-covered boulder with a memorial plaque was placed in front of the still young tree, commemorating the founding of Minden’s most successful sports club.
