Badminton
VEENENDAAL The badminton players of BC ‘t Veen have again achieved a draw. Just like midweek against Druten, it was also a 4-4 draw at GOVA 2 on Sunday.
Early on Sunday morning they traveled to Arnhem to play the match against GOVA 2. With substitute Patrick Schriemer for Leon Wegen, the doubles kicked off. The ladies Jamie van Brienen and Dinja van Haastert achieved an excellent victory. After a good first set (17-21), the second was comfortably lost (21-15). The third set had to be the deciding factor and it ultimately went to the Veense ladies with the greatest of ease (21-13). The ladies showed that they have reached their top level again.
While the ladies started well, the occasional duo of Schriemer and Wouter Fondse lagged behind. The first set was lost without a chance (21-15) and in the second set there was an 11-5 deficit halfway on the board. With tactically better play, things started going well and the deficit was converted into a set win at the end (19-21). In the third set the teams were evenly matched, but at the end GOVA took control and opened a gap to 20-16. With four match points conceded, the decision was made for the Veenendalers to clear the deficit and take the win (22-24).
SINGLE PARTIES
In the single, Schriemer achieved a high level in the first set, but that was just not enough (21-17) to take the win. The leader of GOVA was able to dominate the second set even more and won quite easily (21-8). Van Brienen fared better and was able to dictate the rallies so that she could keep pressure on her opponent. With good and varied play, they won in two sets (15-21 and 17-21).
Fondse was allowed to perform in the second single and made it very exciting. After a narrow victory in the first (19-21), the second was lost by a large margin (21-14). At the end of the third set, Fondse was just able to open the gap and deservedly won the match (18-21). Van Haastert met someone who was slightly better in her opponent. With a lot of fighting spirit, the Veen lady was able to keep up for a long time, but in the end they lost (21-14 21-16).
MIX DOUBLE
In the mixed doubles of Van Brienen and Fondse, the level needed to win was not reached. In the first set the duo came close (21-18), but in the second the difference was bigger (21-13). The second mix was a more exciting match. Schriemer and Van Haastert had chances in the first set but narrowly lost (23-21). The second set was played at a high level (21-13) and so it came down to a decisive third set. In the beginning they fell behind and could not catch up and so the set (21-17) and the match were lost.
With a 4-4 score, both teams could be satisfied and ‘t Veen 1 retains third place in the rankings after half of the competition. The game will be played again on December 1, when it will be the away match against Stuban.
