In a meeting held at the Faculty of Arts of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, which brought together local authorities, diplomatic corps, academics, students and Argentine and Chilean residents, the Argentine ambassador, Sandra Winkler, highlighted that: “The Peace Treaty and Friendship with Chile is a fruitful agreement without which the Argentine-Chilean strategic relationship would not have been possible. Currently, we have a robust legal framework, with a broad bilateral agenda in political, economic, energy, mining, security, border, cooperation, among others.” He then added that “On this anniversary, we celebrate the past and reaffirm our commitment to the future. A future where diplomacy continues to be the central pillar of our foreign relations.”

For his part, Chilean ambassador Axel Cabrera expressed that this activity also honors a friendship that has endured over the decades. This relationship has been consolidated as an example of how two nations were able to overcome differences that dated back more than a century and whose relationship of mutual respect, cooperation and brotherhood has been a model for the region and the world.

Then, Monsignor Piergiorgio Bertoldi, Apostolic Nuncio, referred to the mediation of the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II, through the mission entrusted to Cardinal Antonio Samoré, in order to strive for peace. He highlighted the central role of the Catholic Church as the articulator of a dialogue between brother countries to reach an agreement and build the art of peace.

Subsequently, attendees enjoyed the screening of the film “My Best Enemy,” which portrays the tensions and fraternity between Argentine and Chilean soldiers during the Beagle Channel crisis in 1978, offering a perspective on a conflict that, thanks to the diplomacy, did not materialize. Furthermore, it provides a metaphor for the relationship between Argentina and Chile, marked by the construction of a friendship based on respect and cooperation, which invites us to reflect on the achievements achieved in these years.

To conclude, attendees toasted with the emblematic strains of each country, Argentine Malbec and Chilean Carmenere, jewels of the viticulture of both nations.
