Vin Assmus and Tebbe Monsees really couldn’t have wished for a better ending – even if it wasn’t enough to achieve a really big coup, the badminton doubles from BSG Wallhöfen/Ihlpohl was far from disappointed. Why? The results at the North German Badminton Championships (U13 to U19) in Elmshorn were far too great for that. And in the end, the BSG double was rewarded with a double nomination for the German Youth Championships in its last U19 participation. But first things first.
The North German badminton elite gathered in Schleswig-Holstein to play for their new champions, including five athletes from the Osterholz district. While Vin Assmus and Tebbe Monsees took part in the youth championships for the last time this year, three players from TSV Wallhöfen, Nives Petersen, Viktoria Bernett and Jale Assmus, celebrated their premiere in northern Germany due to their strong performances at the state championships. At this level, the grapes were of course correspondingly high for the debutantes.
Both Janne Ahlers in the U17 singles and Viktoria Bernett in the U15 celebrated opening victories, but then clearly reached their limits – in each case against established opponents. “By reaching the second round, the two had already fulfilled all expectations,” said coach Niko Lütjen afterwards. The joint appearance of Bernett and Petersen in the U15 girls’ doubles was somewhat unsuccessful, where the TSV duo had to admit defeat in three sets despite a few opportunities. Things went a little better for Janne Ahlers and her partner Aila Helene Wendt (Post SV Leer) in the U17 doubles.
“The two harmonized very well in their first round game and impressed with their powerful and consistent attacking game,” reported the Wallhöfen coach after the two-set win (21:15, 21:9). In the quarter-finals, however, the odds against the second-seeded opponents from Hamburg were too high (10:21, 10:21). Vin Assmus and Tebbe Monsees once again provided the sporting highlights.
Extraordinary comeback
In the mixed U19 doubles, both Wallhöfen players and their partners were among the extended favorites and accordingly played their way confidently into the quarter-finals. While Vin Assmus and Luna Marquordt (SV Harkenbleck) didn’t let anything go wrong in the easy and relaxed 21:14, 21:14, Tebbe Monsees and new partner Sarah Keo Boun Khoune (BV Gifhorn) had to stretch hard to win the three sets over fourth-placed Felix Wohlers and Bianka Jensen (19:21, 24:22, 21:14). Monsees/Boun Khoune actually scored 15:20 in the second round. “At this level, such a deficit can no longer be turned around,” said Niko Lütjen, impressed by this extraordinary comeback.
In the semi-finals the hurdles were a little higher – and in the end they couldn’t be overcome against teams from the top national teams. Vin Assmus and Luna Marquordt, who were seeded second, gave the favored youth national players Felix Schütt and Eva Stommel a committed fight and were on equal terms for a long time, but ultimately had to admit defeat 15:21 and 15:21.
Tebbe Monsees and Sarah Keo Boun Khoune even won the first set 21:18 against Aditya Patil (SV BerlinerBrauen) and Lara-Sophie Dreessen (Horner TV), but then precision and speed were somewhat lost and the surprise didn’t materialize in the end ( 13:21, 11:21). Both Monsees and Assmus will still compete with their partners at the German U19 Mixed Championships in Gera at the beginning of December.
In the extremely strong U19 men’s doubles field, Assmus/Monsees entered the tournament as number three and were initially able to save energy in the opening round (21:9, 21:9). Against long-term rivals Matteo Schinzel and Armin Verchow (BV Gifhorn/VfB Merseburg), known from countless duels, the first set of the quarter-finals was lost before Assmus/Monsees were at their best and won unexpectedly clearly with 21:23, 21:11, 21: 13 had the upper hand. The Wallhöfen duo showed a similar top performance in the semi-finals against the second-seeded Berlin formation Aditya Patil and Milan Zeisig – but it was still not enough to reach the final. In the end, Assmus/Monsees lost to the duo from the capital, who were then crowned the new North German champions.
But there was also a happy ending for Vin Assmus and Tebbe Monsees in the U19 doubles, as Niko Lütjen reported with some pride: “They can now end their last year as young people by taking part in the German Championships.”
