(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Eui-jin = In response to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s point that the Korea Badminton Association violated the subsidy law, it issued a statement that was close to a refutation, saying, “This is a matter in compliance with the guidelines.”

On the 23rd, the Badminton Association announced through a press release in the name of Chairman Kim Taek-gyu, “Regarding the violation of the subsidy law for the promotion system league and youth club league, we applied and executed the business plan with the approval of the higher authority in compliance with the guidelines of the Korea Sports Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.” .

He added, “This was done in compliance with the guidelines, including completing settlement verification through a certified public accounting agency. We are doing our best to prove this.”

According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s office inspection announcement at the end of last month, the association received sponsorship items worth about 150 million won through a verbal contract in the process of purchasing shuttlecocks and other items as part of a government-supported project last year.

This year, there is a written contract to receive goods worth 140 million won.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s judgment is that the donation items delivered in this way were arbitrarily distributed to regions without formal procedures.

Last year, supplies worth 40 million won were provided to the Taean-gun Badminton Association, which belongs to the chairman of the association’s public offering project promotion committee.

At the time, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism designated Chairman Kim Taek-gyu as the person responsible and requested the association’s Sports Fair Committee to dismiss him, saying it would request an investigation into him on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust.

In addition, as a follow-up measure for violating the subsidy law, a return of 150 million won for the previous year was ordered and an additional penalty of 450 million won was imposed. The refund amount for this year will be confirmed after business settlement.

Contrary to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s announcement, the association, which took the position that ‘the regulations were followed’, did not explain details such as the grounds on which the administration in question should not be judged as a violation of the Subsidy Act.

The association, which was also asked to improve various unreasonable practices in addition to the subsidy issue, said, “We are doing our best to correct some incorrect systems and regulations that have existed for a long time and improve the operation of the national team and association.”

He explained, “We conducted interviews with the national team players and held briefing sessions for communication to actively collect the players’ opinions. We revised some of the absurd national team management guidelines.”

They also announced that they are working on changing the contract to reflect the players’ opinions, including holding three meetings with the equipment sponsor.

The association said, “While respecting the right of national team players to choose, we are doing our best to ensure that many players, excluding certain players, are not excluded from sponsorship benefits.”

He added, “We will actively revise the wrong systems and regulations to normalize the association. We will take this incident as a lesson and strive to make badminton a sports organization that is loved and shameless by everyone.”

The association, which promised ‘normalization’, will hold an award ceremony for medalists at the 2024 Paris Olympics at the Arina Hotel in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do at the end of this month.

Gold medalist Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) will receive 100 million won, and silver medalists Kim Won-ho (Samsung Life Insurance) and Jeong Na-eun (Hwasun County Office) will each receive 50 million won.
