▲The following is the statement from the Badminton Association.
On October 31, following the announcement of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s inspection of the Korean Badminton Association, our association recognized the current situation as the greatest crisis and an opportunity for further development and harmony, and to improve some of the wrong systems and regulations that have been in place for a long time. We are doing our best to improve national team operations and association operations.
In order to closely understand the operational status of the national team, we conducted interviews with the national team players, held briefing sessions to communicate with the players, actively collected the players’ opinions, and explained some of the absurdities of the national team’s operation. The guidelines have been revised.
In addition, three meetings were held with the equipment sponsor to change the contract provisions to reflect the opinions of the national team players, and differences of opinion are being resolved. While we respect the right of choice of national team players, we are doing our best to ensure that many players, excluding certain players, are not excluded from the benefits of sponsorship.
An emergency response meeting was held in which various people, including city/provincial association presidents, national federation presidents, and executive officers, participated, and about 10 meetings were held with badminton officials from all over the country to discuss pending issues regarding the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s requirements for system improvement. We explained and collected opinions for improvement.
Regarding violations of the subsidy law for promotion-based leagues and youth club leagues, follow the guidelines of the Korea Sports Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to apply for subsidies, execute them, and complete settlement verification through a certified public accounting agency with the approval of a higher-level organization for the business plan. It has been done in compliance with the subsidy use procedures, and we are doing our best to prove this.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism gave the association two months and asked it to make efforts to improve the action requirements within this year. Accordingly, we are working hard day and night to show our will and results for change not only to the relevant ministries but also to all those who love and support badminton. We are collecting opinions and preparing improvement plans through interviews, briefings, and meetings. there is.
In addition, an award ceremony will be held for the athletes who won gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics 16 years after the 2008 Beijing Olympics. A total of 300 million won in rewards will be paid to the athletes, including 100 million won for gold medals and 50 million won for each silver medalist, and the ‘Woncheon Yonex’ The Korea Junior Competition is scheduled to be held on November 30th at the Arina Hotel in Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.
Our association feels a great sense of responsibility for resolving the current situation and will actively revise erroneous systems and regulations so that the association can return to normal. In addition, we will take this incident as a lesson and do our best to help badminton become a sports organization that is loved and shamed by everyone.
