Badminton Bundesliga double round – better result than expected at the weekend!

The omens for the double round scheduled for last weekend were anything but ideal. Due to the failure of our number 1 among men and number 2 among women, our expectations were very limited. Ultimately, things went much better than expected thanks to excellent performances from the rest of the squad.

ASV-Pressbaum against ASKÖ Traun 4:4

On Saturday, no points were calculated against last year’s champions ASV-Pressbaum. But right from the start things went much better for us than expected.

Through a clever line-up we surprised our opponents and were able to take home a 4-4 draw.

ASKÖ Traun against WAT Simmering 5:3

With the self-confidence from Saturday’s match, we went against newly promoted WAT Simmering on Sunday. We also went into this match, like the day before, weakened, and after an exciting game we ultimately managed a 5-3 win.

Comment after the weekend:

We actually had no expectations of success before the double round, but it turned out much better than expected. We were even 2-1 ahead against the fully competitive opponents from Pressbaum thanks to victories in the 2nd men’s doubles (Kai Niederhuber/Wolfgang Gnedt) and the women’s doubles (Catlyn Kruus/Sabina Balut). After seven of the eight games it was surprisingly 4:3 for us, and in the second men’s singles Kai Niederhuber won in 4 sets, Catlyn Kruus decided her singles confidently. In the last game, Pressbaum was able to make it 4:4 with a win in the mixed doubles.

Sunday’s game against WAT Simmering was not for the faint of heart. Koch Jürgen/Kai Niederhuber decided the 1st men’s doubles in 3-0 sets. The 2nd men’s doubles and the women’s doubles went to our opponents from Vienna. After the first men’s singles, the Simmeringers even took the lead 3:2, Kai Niederhuber made it 3:3 after a confident performance. In the 3rd men’s singles, young player Elias Spitzhofer surprised with a 3-set win and made it 4:3 for Traun, his first win in the Bundesliga. Now the last game had to decide whether to win or draw, with the Viennese Drexler/Hochmeir being easy favorites. After a dramatic game, veteran Jürgen Koch and Sabina Balut managed to win the game 11:8 for Traun in the 5th set.
