The Uzwil badminton club celebrated two 5-3 victories in the National League A at the weekend; first in the home game against Zurich, then in the away game against Yverdon. With four wins from the first five rounds, the team unexpectedly moved up to second place in the table, just one point behind leader Lausanne.

The leading players such as Victor Svendsen, Robin Tabeling and Cheryl Seinen are particularly convincing. The three foreign badminton professionals are among the reliable points suppliers. The Dane Victor Svendsen has won eight out of nine games so far this season, the Dutch duo Robin Tabeling has won seven out of ten games and Cheryl Seinen has won three out of five games. The group around young players Noel Tappeiner, Liano Panza, Lina Schadegg and Jorina Jann also regularly scores points. The two young women are still undefeated this season.

The two 5:3 victories at the weekend were further proof of the strong team performance. An even bigger win would have been possible in the home game against Zurich. Iztok Utrosa narrowly lost in the third men’s singles. Even in the second men’s doubles with Tabeling/Panza, more would have been possible. But in the end all of this is just a minor matter. Because the Uzwil team knew how to convince in the subsequent games, especially in the women’s games they were clearly better.

This collective calm is surprising given that it was often missing last season. The naturalness of being able to win even close games is back. The fact that Uzwil is in second place in the table after five rounds of games is a nice snapshot. But the season is still young. And the squad remains thin. In order to continue the high flight, there must be no more personnel losses. (zin)
