On the ninth matchday in the Second Bundesliga North last Saturday, VfB Grün-Weiß Mülheim played at home against newly promoted Gladbecker FC, who had recently been in impressive form
For comparison: Two weeks ago, Gladbecker FC beat SC Union Lüdinghausen 7-0 at home. The day before, Lüdinghausen had won 4-3 against Green-White.
It was the expected close encounter.
VfB Grün-Weiß Mülheim had to forego its home hall at short notice and moved to the sports hall on Boverstraße. Nevertheless, over 100 spectators made their way to support their team.
Supported by the loud audience, Green-White took a 2-0 lead after the first two games: Alexander Roovers and Vasily Kuznetsov defeated Johann Burmester/Gasper Krivec in three sets.
Maria Kuse and Lea-Lyn Stremlau also won against Marija Sudimac/Isabel Kleban in three sets.
However, with two wins in the women’s singles and the second men’s doubles, the guests then equalized and were back in the game.
Alexander Roovers won the first men’s singles in three sets against the Slovenian Gasper Krivec.
The women’s singles also went to Serbian Marija Sudimac in three sets. Maria Kuse stepped in for the ailing Xenia Kölmel. However, Kuse hardly found her game against Sudimac, who was previously unbeaten in singles.
With the score at 3:2 for Green-White, one game point was still missing for victory
It initially looked like this: Vasily Kuznetsov and Lea-Lyn Stremlau were already leading 2-0 sets in the mixed doubles against Maximilian Große-Kreul/Isabel Kleban. In the third set, the Gladbeck Mixed team changed their style of play and turned the match into five sets.
On the neighboring field, Dorian Tihi had the opportunity to score the fourth game point in the second men’s doubles match against Nils Wackertapp. The game was initially completely open, with Tihi having the referee’s decision against him in controversial situations towards the end of the first two sets and losing the thread. Experienced Wackertapp used the resulting momentum and brought home the third set safely.
The game went 4:3 to the guests from Gladbeck, who took two points and were now able to close the gap to Green-White in the table to within two points. One point remained in Mülheim – not enough to prevent TV Refrath 2 from overtaking BC Beuel with a win and now being in fourth place in the table ahead of Green-White.
“We saw high-quality and exciting games. “Gladbeck was the better team today,” summed up the club board and team manager Sven Anstötz. “Although we had to change the venue at short notice, it was a real home game with over a hundred spectators. My thanks go to the many helpers and supporters who made this possible!”
