Grant Basile called up to the national team, a great opportunity for the player, not only in terms of sporting experience, but also for Cantù Basketball. In fact, a debate has opened about the Italian-American player, which the rules, however, seem to clarify. The player, if he is included in one of the matches that Italy will play next week against Iceland for the EuroBasket 2025 qualifying window, will obtain the status of a trained Italian player. On this point, there is no doubt. The debate instead opened on the timing of this change: would it be immediate or would it come into force from next season?
Leafing through the Federbasket Membership Executive Regulation, in paragraph 3 of article 23, there seems to be little doubt in this regard. Basile would become a trained Italian immediately. All that is required is a formal request from the club to which one belongs, therefore Pallacanestro Cantù: «Changing the training status – the regulation cites – can only take place upon request of the club concerned. In the absence of a request, the Italian team will be automatically recognized at the beginning of the new sports season.”
