Crime statistics on residential burglaries in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis district
Under German law, simple theft can be punished with up to five years in prison. For serious theft, the maximum penalty increases to ten years. These include, for example, gang-related theft or residential burglaries. Carrying a weapon can also result in a higher penalty.
In total, there were around 1.8 million thefts in 2022. That is 20.0 percent more than a year before.
Around three out of ten thefts were solved in 2022. However, there are clear differences depending on the type of theft. As soon as money is stolen, only 7.9 percent of cases are solved; for shoplifting, the figure is 89.8 percent. However, not all cases are reported. Especially when it comes to shoplifting, often only cases in which the thief has already been caught are reported.
