São Paulo, Nov 2 (EFE).- Luiz Yoshio Onmura, a reference in Brazilian judo and winner of the bronze medal in the up to 71 kilo category at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, has died at the age of 64.
The judoka died on Friday night, a victim of cancer, in Santos, a coastal city in the state of São Paulo.
The news was confirmed this Saturday by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), which noted that “Onmura’s last fight was against squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.”
The president of the COB, Paulo Wanderley Teixeira, mourned the death of the judoka, who “proudly represented the colors of Brazil and the values of judo and Olympism, demonstrating humility and fighting bravely for his life.”
Luiz Onmura competed in three editions of the Olympic Games, Moscow (1980), Los Angeles (1984), where he won a bronze medal, and Seoul (1988).
The Olympian from São Paulo won three silver medals at the Pan American Games in 1979, 1983 and 1987.
When he abandoned his career as an athlete, Onmura entered a competition as an Investigator in the Civil Police of the State of São Paulo, where he was a shooting instructor and professor at the Police Academy. EFE
