The great judo festival in Spain will raise the curtain with the Iberdrola senior Spanish championship this Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and will culminate with the long-awaited finals, starting at 4:45 p.m.

MORE THAN 500 JUDOKAS AT THE GREAT JUDO FESTIVAL IN SPAIN

The 71st edition of the absolute national competition will bring together the best judokas in Spain and will have a total participation of 154 boys and 151 girls, a parity that is difficult to find in other sports, representing 17 autonomous communities.

The fights are scheduled to be held simultaneously in four different competition zones, except for the finals, which will be played individually.

A LUXURY IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

Leticia López, manager of the Insular Sports Institute of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria underlined the importance of an event of such magnitude being held for the first time in the Canary Islands: “We are going to enjoy the best judokas in Spain, in the absolute and veteran categories, and that is a luxury for Gran Canaria. The Gran Canaria Arena, without a doubt, is the most appropriate place to host a sport that increasingly has more federative licenses and continues to constantly grow.”

For his part, the general director of Physical Activity and Sports, Jose Francisco Pérez Martín, reiterated the responsibility and pride that hosting such a relevant event entails for the archipelago: “It is an honor that the Canary Islands flag supports an event of maximum level. Gran Canaria will be the capital of judo for three days and the enthusiasm and talent will overflow in the Gran Canaria Arena,” he noted.

Likewise, the Councilor for Youth and Sports of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, Carla Campoamor, reiterated how lucky it is for the capital of the island to “be able to see some of the best international judokas in action in a city that is committed to a sport that, after soccer, has more federative licenses than any other. It will be a successful weekend in which the little ones will enjoy their idols,” he assured.

The best judokas in the country will exude passion, technique, camaraderie, respect, sportsmanship, effort and talent, values ​​that a sport like judo transmits.

CANARY ISLANDS WILL PROVIDE 19 JUDOKA

Madrid will have 78 athletes as the community with the largest number of representatives, while the Canary Islands will contribute the not inconsiderable number of 19 athletes.

Finally, the technical director of the Canary Islands Judo Federation, Alejandro Doblado, spoke of an old aspiration come true: “It is a dream that we have been seeking for many years with the dedication of a man like Antonio Coruña, president of the Canary Islands Federation. , who has been fighting for this moment for ten years, and the support of the sports advisor of the Island Council, Aridany Romero, who traveled to Navarra last year to help build the dream. We will enjoy the best of the best in judo: Olympians in Paris 2024, medalists and also great Canarian athletes in an unforgettable weekend,” he concluded.

The 71st edition of the Iberdrola Senior Spanish Judo and Sports Championship Associates and the Spanish Veterans Championship is organized by the Royal Spanish Judo Federation, sponsored by Iberdrola and promoted by the Higher Sports Council, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
