A puzzle about to be solved? The years pass and the organization of the Champions Trophy seems to make the LFP and the participating clubs nauseous. Between the organizers who failed in 2023 to host PSG-Toulouse after the announcement of Messi’s departure, the behind-the-scenes negotiations to ensure that the meeting took place at the Parc des Princes, the 2024 edition also drains its lot of adventures. Initially scheduled for China last summer before being canceled, the match between PSG and Monaco could take place in Qatar, according to RMC.
A decision on Thursday?
For several months, several options have been studied by the LFP and the two clubs, including that of not playing the match, which would have been an additional task for the League. The idea of a new meeting in France was studied but the League seems to favor a more lucrative option abroad. Ivory Coast was one of the candidates but Qatar offers more guarantees. For the moment, nothing has been finalized but Doha is the most credible destination.
In addition to the location, it remains to choose the date to organize the match. Both involved in the Champions League, Paris and Monaco have the same calendar issues and had been asked to agree to set the date of the Champions Trophy. And the latest echoes reported a date at the beginning of January without anything being, again, decided. In fact, the two clubs must meet in Ligue 1 on January 5 at the Louis-II stadium and will play two championship matches on the weekends of the 12th and 19th before seeing their calendar be intensified by the return of the Champions League.
The League’s board of directors, which meets Thursday, should rule on this matter.
