Chelsea goalkeeping coach Hilario has left his position to join Thomas Tuchel’s England team.
When Tuchel officially took over on January 1, Hilario decided to leave Stamford Bridge after 16 years at the club to become England’s goalkeeping coach.
Chelsea are not looking for a replacement as Enzo Maresca still has goalkeeping coach Michel De Bernardin and former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero in his squad. The club also boasts James Russell, assistant goalkeeping coach and academy head goalkeeper, and Chelsea goalkeeper Ben Roberts.
Hilario’s decision to leave for England was amicable, according to former Chelsea head of performance analysis James Melbourne.
Chelsea bought Hilario from Portugal’s Nacional in 2006 on a free transfer to become a backup goalkeeper. He remained until 2014, making just 39 appearances in all competitions.
The 49-year-old returned to the team after two years as assistant goalkeeper under Antonio Conte and has been in charge of Chelsea ever since. This is what Tuchel did when he led Chelsea from January 2021 to September 2023.
Tuchel was appointed as Gareth Southgate’s replacement in England in October under a contract that runs until 2025.
