Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker underwent surgery to treat a meniscus injury in his left leg Friday.
Head coach Andy Reid, however, indicated that Butker, who kicks with his right leg, could be back later this season.
The Chiefs signed Spencer Shrader, previously a member of the New York Jets’ practice squad, to replace Butker for at least the next four weeks.
In his only two NFL games, Shrader made all three of his conversions for the Indianapolis Colts against the Houston Astros and his two field goal attempts for the Jets against the Arizona Cardinals.
Undefeated, the Chiefs (9-0) will face the Bills in Buffalo (8-2) this week in an important game for first place in the American Association.
Butker is the third most accurate scorer in NFL history since he began his career in 2017, trailing only Justin Tucker and Eddy Pineiro at nearly 90%. He made 18 field goals in 20 attempts this season, including a 51-yarder that gave the Chiefs a 26-25 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on the final play of the game.
Butker also holds the record for longest field goal in team history. It was a distance of 62 yards.
“He’s phenomenal,” Reid said. He’s a great kicker. He will probably go to the Hall of Fame.
