China Masters: tough day for the Tricolores

While there were 5 of them who qualified for the round of 16 – 2 doubles and 1 singles – there are no more French people left on the courts of the China Masters (Super 750). Alex LANIER, Thom GICQUEL and Delphine DELRUE as well as Christo POPOV and Toma Junior POPOV lost today.

Men’s singles

Against the Hong Konger NG Ka Long Angus (n°19), Alex LANIER (n°16) fought but it was not enough. After a bad start (0/8), the Frenchman struggled to come back in the first set. Forced to take control in the second in order to stay in the race, Alex left a lot of energy there, probably too much to be able to extinguish his opponent’s game, 15/21 21/18 13/21.

Men’s doubles

Christo and Toma Junior POPOV (n°32) who had never won before against Kim ASTRUP and Anders Skaarup RASMUSSEN (n°3) did not manage to knock them down in Shenzen. Taking the lead, the reigning European Champions gave the Tricolores no chance, who lost 16/21 13/21.

Mixed doubles

Well off to a good start in this meeting, Thom GICQUEL and Delphine DELRUE (n°17) came up against the Malaysian duo CHEN Tang Jie/TOH Ee Wei (n°10). If in the first set the French took the reins of the match, the second, hotly contested, turned to the advantage of the Malaysians. Stunned by the return of CHEN/TOH, the mixed tricolor no longer found solutions and ended up losing 21/14 21/23 8/21.
