Christian Ziege‘s wife Pia died after a serious illness. The former national player announced this in an emotional message on Instagram. The couple had been married for 27 years.
Christian Ziege mourns the loss of his wife Pia. The former national player and 1996 European champion announced via Instagram that his wife died on Monday, November 4th, after a long, serious illness.
Ziege shares several photos of himself and his Pia on the social media platform. “And there are always traces of your life, thoughts, images, moments. “They will remind us of you, make us happy and sad and never let us forget you,” the 52-year-old writes about the pictures.
Ziege, who played 227 games for FC Bayern Munich and played for AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspurs, Liverpool FC, Middlesbrough and Borussia Mönchengladbach, had been married to Pia since 1997. They have two children together, Alessandro and Maria. Pia brought her daughter Katharina into the relationship.
“Our world has stood still since November 4th. After a long, serious illness, Pia closed her eyes forever. We would like to thank everyone who has walked this long and difficult journey with us and for their great sympathy and compassion. Pia, you will live on forever in our hearts,” wrote Ziege after the tragic loss.
The Berlin-born Ziege moved from Hertha 03 Zehlendorf’s youth team to FC Bayern in 1990. There he matured as a left-back to become a national player. He became Italian and German champions, won the FA Cup twice in England with Liverpool and was UEFA Cup winner with Bayern and Liverpool. Ziege ended his career with Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2005 after a serious ankle injury.
Most recently, Ziege worked as sports director of the Austrian third division club FC Pinzgau Saalfelden, where his son plays.
