MIAMI, Fla. – The <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/01/yankees-minor-league-manager-rachel-balkovec-says-shes-living-the-american-dream-with-her-new-role/” title=”Yankees minor league manager Rachel Balkovec says she's living the 'American dream' with her new role”>Miami Marlins have hired Clayton McCullough as their new manager, according to multiple reports.

Various sources confirmed to ESPN Sunday that McCullough, 44, who has been the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ first base coach since 2021, will replace Skip Schumaker, who parted ways with the Marlins at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

McCullough was in contention for the Chicago White Sox manager job, but that position went to Will Venable. Although Cleveland Guardians bench coach Craig Albernaz was considered a leading candidate for the Marlins, he later withdrew from consideration.

McCullough brings experience from his time coaching with the Dodgers, including their journey to another World Series title. He had previously interviewed for manager roles with several teams, including the Guardians, Royals, Brewers and Mets.

Before joining the Dodgers, McCullough was a manager in the Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league system and then worked as the Dodgers’ minor league field coordinator in 2015. During that time, Marlins assistant general manager, Gabe Kapler oversaw player development with the Dodgers, creating an early connection between the two.

The Marlins are now looking for a resurgence under McCullough’s leadership.

Since their 2003 World Series victory, they have only made the playoffs twice and have not finished higher than third place in the NL East since 2020. Last season, Miami won 62 games, its fewest since 2019, and Schumaker finished his two-year tenure with a 146-178 record.
