Clermont dominates the UBB with style but without the bonus

TOP 14 2024-2025 – Dominant throughout the match, ASM Clermont Auvergne won in style against Union Bordeaux-Bègles (32-20). The ASM nevertheless narrowly misses the offensive bonus.

You shouldn’t arrive late at the Michelin stadium. Having entered the match well, the players of Christophe Urios scored two very quick tries by Joris Jurand (1’) et Pierre Fouyssac (14′). Effective in attack and aggressive in defense, the Jaunards had an almost perfect start to the match. The only downside was constant indiscipline, which allowed the Bordelais to stay in contact thanks to two penalties. Joey Carbery (12-6, 20′). Still dominant, the Clermontois continued their recital in the first act. And after a great sequence of play, Bautista Delguy allows the Jaunards to take a clear lead at the break (17-6).

Bordeaux avoids the rout.

Deprived of several executives (Matthieu Jalibert, Yoram Moefana, Nicolas Depoortere, Louis Bielle-Biarrey, etc.) the Bordelo-Béglais missed out on their first period. But they started the second with better intentions. Arrived thrown like a ball, Lachlan Swinton scored the first try for UBB (17-11, 48′). But while a revolt was expected, it was quickly nipped in the bud by the Clermontois. No doubt upset by this failed start, the Auvergnats then scored 17 points in 10 minutes, thanks to two attempts of Léon Darricarere (53’) et Barnabas Massa (64′). These attempts were enhanced by two transformations and a penalty of Benjamin Urdapilleta. Not very skilful in the first half, the Argentinian opener settled the score in the second and allowed his team to take cover before the last quarter of an hour (32-13, 65′).

In numerical superiority, the Bordelo-Béglais saved the honor thanks to a late try of Maxime Lamothe (74′). This test marked the opening of a crazy money time. Well found at the end of a carried ball, Joris Jurand crossed the try line and exploded the Marcel Michelin stadium (79′). However, the referee brought the temperature down a notch after the conversion, by canceling the try due to a screen on the action, spotted on the video referee.

Wanting to avoid the rout, the UBB players then rushed into attack. And after the siren, Test Matthew scores a corner try which deprives ASM of the offensive bonus. In the process, Joey Carbery transforms and offers a defensive bonus point to his team (32-27).

Dominated overall and undisciplined, the Bordelo-Béglais still left Clermont with an unexpected bonus point. For their part, the Clermontois may harbor regrets. Such a performance would undoubtedly have deserved better…
